Post subject: Is D4S still here? / Help editing SD3 title screen.  PostPosted: Oct 08, 2010 - 12:26 PM

A long long time ago I posted a thread to a forum asking about changing the title screen of Seiken Densetsu 3 to Secret of Mana 2, and I was flamed by many purists and people who viewed my desire to change the title as a sin against the team who translated the game into English.

The thought only came into my mind after seeing a screen image of D4S's version, because of this I knew that somewhere out there, there was a version of the translation that had this title.

Despite all the anger in the thread from purists, one person by the name of "Dragonsbrethren" was nice enough to dissamble a German ips patch which had the title I wanted, and he then isolated the title graphics and turned this into a patch to replace the SD3 title with SoM2.

It was nice and I appreciated him doing that, although it was somewhat blurry and difficult to read on a TV, due to a lack of darkness inside certain letters (see comparison image below). But it satisfied me for a while.

Although recently, I had thought maybe it could be possible to use DB's ips file to make a patch if I could wipe the slate and input my own font. Unfortunately, every tile editing program I have used only shows walls of pixelated fuzz. The only thing that shows me any recognizable graphics is VSNES, but this program doesn't edit.

And I read that the graphics in SD3 are hidden by "compression." I found a thread in nesdev where a person named Magno was advertising his "SD3 Utility" which made editing the graphics easier, even for people with no romhacking knowledge, but there was no download link for this tool in the thread, and it doesn't show up on his website either...

This is the title screen I want to implant into the rom...

If anyone could help me (or if D4S would be willing to explain the method of how to edit this title screen) I would appreciate it.

I'd rather state an inquiry here: http://ultra16.dforce3000.de/contact_ger.htm

I sent emails to the addresses "matt@dforce3000.de" and the address pictured in the image above... I guess these are both old and no longer being used, so I will try emailing the addresses you supplied.

He responded from the "matt@dforce3000.de" address, to my surprise. He said that it was a very long time ago when he edited this title screen and he doesn't remember the details of how he did it when he did and that he does not think he still has a copy of his hack on his machine anymore. He said the palette is not compressed, but the graphics are compressed. He also said to contact Magno if I can, and that his SD3 Utility might be easier for me to learn to use... unfortunately it seems Magno is not present or is just slow to reply to emails.

It seems that without that tool, editing this screen is "biting off more than I can chew" to quote a phrase. Maybe there is a chance someone could use DB's SoM2 IPS file, find the palette and then adjust it so that the space inside the letters is darker and more pronounced (as it is in D4S's version).

hi KB,

nice to see that iam not the only one which work on improvement of som2

I got the tool from magno befor 16 month and have work on a german bug free retranslation. The tool is very useful and easy to use.

At the moment we are in the beta stage and check text and so on.

To the topic.

The idea to improve the title of som2 is a good idea. The problem is, how can i realise the idea.

Unfortunatly, you dont extract uncompress the english som2 rom with the tool from magno. You can "only" nearly edit the full text, grafics and many more.

If you want, i can try to insert the new grafic in the current german version and text the result.

visit me at snes-projects.de

regards

You are the only person, aside from Dragonsbrethren, to reply positively about this...

Thank you.

[quote:b382d26e0b="RedScorpion"]hi KB, if you want, i can try to insert the new grafic in the current german version and text the result.

By this sentence, do you mean there is a new german patch being made with a clearer title screen but still using Neil's original font (like D4S's), or did you mean that you would be willing to try and insert my concept graphic as the title screen? If you did either one of these things and could isolate that so it would become a patch which could be applied over an english-patched version of the rom, I would be very happy.

I was told on another forum that my concept graphic needs to be reduced, not only in size but in color, using a program called Rotsprite, but the link they supplied is also down... u.u

^ I attempted to make the embossing less chiseled and more flat so that maybe it would look better.

^And another with a black outline.
