I posted a C64 Emulator Comparison about a week ago. The tested Emulators were CCS64, Hoxs64, Frodo and VICE. Now the translation is done, thanks to XTale and retroK who helped me with it. You´ll find the translation here. Comments are always welcome! |

This comparison might also include note about quality of sound (which is one of the most difficult parts of the emulation regarding C64) and perhaps what does the internal palette look like compared to the real machine (I would compare emulator's video output with the real machine's monitor sitting just next to the PC monitor). Otherwise I think the article is fine and gives a good overview of what can one await from each of the participants. |

It would have been nice if not
only emus for Windows had been
tested. For those who do not use
Windows the GUI comparison was
not very helpful. |

I assume, you are talking about Linux Emulators. Well, i dont know Linux or MacOS at all, so this is kinda hard to realize. Testing DOS Emulators isnt easier, as i couldnt check the sound. (it doesnt work fine at a Windows NT based OS.) |

Actually, I am using DR-DOS, and
yes, testing DOS emus on NT *is*
a problem. So what? Just use a
DOS boot disk to test them and
everything will be fine.
Besides, running an emu without
sound should still be enough to
test the GUI. |

Maybe if you own a DOS capable Soundcard... |

One interesting thing to try is to see if the emulator will run the game "Pharaoh's Curse" correctly or at all... which I believe was made by Synapse Software, but I am not sure.
My recollection from back in the 1980s was that this game worked on the normal C-64, but did NOT work in the C-128 running in C-64 mode. When run, the game would only display a blank black screen.
I noticed that this seemed to be a problem with some emulators as well. Some would run this game, others would not, although it's been too long ago since I compared them to remember which ones worked and which didn't.
I know VICE currently does, or at least does work this game correctly with the VICE version I currently have. Unfortunately I'm at work right now and I have VICE on my machine at home.
Anyway, I thought running that particular game would be an interesting compatibility test because even on the real Commodore machines, it wouldn't work on the C-128 in C-64 mode. |
